As the first anniversary of the New EU Pact on Migration approaches, this article provides snapshots of current developments on the ground, particularly in Europe’s border regions. In response to the increasing hostility faced by people on the move across the EU, it highlights the urgent need for action and policy change. Migration has become a deeply polarising issue, often framed through opposing political ideologies. This divisive discourse serves as a harmful and dehumanising tool, reinforcing the "othering" of people on the move. As political groups continue to weaponize migration to further their agendas, those most affected by increasingly hostile policies are left in precarious and vulnerable situations.

This article takes a look at the growing hostility against asylum in Europe. We explore the measures Bulgaria is taking to conform with the New Pact, and Poland’s move to suspend the right to claim asylum. We also assess recent trends in rejections and deportations in Italy and Greece, as well as the ongoing issue of illegal pushbacks, which continue to be a persistent violation of human rights. This article also examines the situation faced by many Syrian people with refugee status, across Europe, in light of the fall of Assad’s regime.
